Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for mobilisation to site
   • Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply mobilise equipment and materials documentation and confirm work activity is compliant
   • Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
   • Prepare vehicle, vehicle kit, camping equipment, First Aid kit, survival kit and personal equipment for remote assignment
2. Carry out prestart and routine checks
   • Carry out prestart, daily engine, fuel and fluid level checks according to workplace procedures
   • Observe safety procedures while checking hydraulic systems, high-pressure air, electrical circuits and batteries
3. Proceed to exploration site
   • Drive vehicle according to policies, procedures and legal regulations
   • Apply safe driving techniques to all vehicles
   • Position and arrange loads so they will be carried in a safe manner to prevent loss and damage to vehicle or cargo
   • Use a range of load restraints and lashings to secure various loads to a vehicle
   • Identify and assess ground conditions before driving vehicle across country
   • Drive vehicle off road in a range of terrains
   • Demonstrate stall recovery
   • Use maps, communication and navigation aids/equipment
   • Identify and avoid potential/actual hazards on the route
   • Carry out emergency procedures according to manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
   • Recognise and demonstrate basic survival techniques for a range of situations
   • Communicate information to base or other vehicles according to work requirements and workplace procedures
   • Complete move to site and all required documentation according to workplace procedures
4. Carry out basic operator maintenance
   • Identify hazards and methods of minimising hazards in conducting maintenance, particularly in the field
   • Carry out minor repairs/replacements as required according to manufacturer specifications
   • Overcome minor breakdowns and bogging using recovery techniques
   • Carry out vehicle washing and housekeeping regularly according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

mobilise equipment and materials on at least two occasions, including:

performing start-up and safety checks according to organisation and supplier/manufacturer specifications

driving with the minimum of damage to vehicles, equipment and structures

operating vehicle in a safe manner in a range of conditions, including on and off road

navigating to destination site for delivery of equipment and materials

performing routine checks and maintenance, and minor repairs

using written and verbal communication to coordinate activity

completing all required documentation.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply required, documentation, policies and procedures

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for the completion of mobilising equipment and materials, including:

applying communication and recording skills

performing manual and mechanical handling

driving laden vehicles (on and off road)

performing basic maintenance skills

applying knots, load securing devices and attachment points for loaded vehicles

applying recovery techniques for bogged plant/vehicles

acquiring required licenses and permits

applying diagnostic and troubleshooting procedures

work with others to mobilise materials and equipment that meets all of the required outcomes, including:

communicating information to base or other vehicles.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key policies, procedures and established requirements for mobilising equipment and materials, including those for:

safe carrying of loads

operational maintenance

driving, recovering and washing vehicles

emergencies

workplace health and safety

housekeeping

reasons loads shift and methods of preventing shifting

number and types of lashings to apply, fixing points and basic knots

procedures for applying a range of acquired safety and survival skills

hydraulic systems, components and cleanliness requirements

internal combustion motors and the major components.
